  4. Country Description:  Benin is a developing West African country.  Its
  5. capital city is Porto Novo; however the adjoining city of Cotonou is the
  6. main port and site of most government and tourist activity.  Tourist
  7. facilities in Cotonou are available, but are not fully developed elsewhere.

  9. Entry Requirements:  U.S. citizens are required to have a passport and a
  10. visa in order to enter the country.  Visa applications and further
  11. information on entry requirements may be obtained from the Embassy of the
  12. Republic of Benin, 2737 Cathedral Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008,
  13. telephone (202) 232-6656.

  15. Areas of Instability:  Because of security concerns in remote areas,
  16. especially in the northern region of Atacora, travel can be dangerous.
  17. Travel at night, outside of population centers, poses a risk.  Travelers may
  18. wish to contact the U.S. Embassy in Cotonou for the latest security
  19. information.

  21. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities in Benin are limited.  Not all
  22. medicines are available.  Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash
  23. payment for health services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid
  24. outside the United States.  Supplementary medical insurance with specific
  25. overseas coverage has proved to be useful.  Questions on health matters may
  26. be referred to the Centers for Disease Control's international travelers
  27. hotline at (404) 332-4559.

  29. Information on Crime:  Crime rates are rising, particularly in the city of
  30. Cotonou.  Armed criminals have used force in some cases.  The loss or theft
  31. abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to the local police
  32. and to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  The pamphlets "A Safe Trip
  33. Abroad" and "Tips for Travelers to Sub-Saharan Africa" provide useful
  34. information on protecting personal security while traveling abroad and on
  35. travel in the region in general.  Both are available from the Superintendent
  36. of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  38. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  39. which they are traveling.  Strict laws regarding possession or
  40. transportation of drugs are enforced.  Convicted offenders can expect jail
  41. sentences and fines.

  43. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register at the U.S. Embassy may obtain
  44. updated information on travel and security in Benin.
